Organic. What Does It Mean?

Organic, such an overused word. It has various meanings

  • natural – an advertisement once proudly claimed, ‘ natural organic ‘.
  • a branch of chemistry – organic chemistry
  • a contributing content of soil – organic matter
  • growth – business spin doctors have joined the green bandwagon, ‘ grow the business organically ‘.

Organic as applied to agriculture means a system of food production

  • in which the environment is an important part of any consideration
  • that increases the health and fertility of the soil
  • a contributing content of soil – organic matter
  • that encourages biodiversity
  • that seeks to spread the word about open pollinated varieties
  • that opposes mono cropping
  • which does not allow for synthetic fertilisers, herbicides and insecticides
  • that s opposed to genetic engineering of food crops

Unfortunately there is no government requirement that food labelled organic is certified organic. Work is ongoing in this area, and it is better than it used to be, but if you want to make sure that you are eating food that has been grown according to organic standards, look for food (including processed food) that carry any of these logos.

All of the above certifying bodies are accredited by the Department of Agriculture (DoA) to verify that food is grown according to the organic standards.
